A tribute to Brother Columba Gleeson – by Bishop Simon Poh

Bishop Simon Poh at homily during the requiem Mass for Brother Columba on 13 February

Br Columba was my principal from 1976-1982. His dedication and commitment – together with Br Adrian and Br Mark – were remarkable and bore fruits in sports, athletics, academics and faith development. Br Columba has been used by God to be part of my faith journey. I was in Form 4 in 1979 when he started his Sunday Faith Formation classes. This eventually led to my Baptism and by Upper Six, I entered St Peter’s College to respond to God’s Call. It was thus a great joy to honour Br Columba at his Memorial Service and to preach the homily at his Requiem Mass on 13 February.

“… when suffering inevitably enters our own lives, let us be encouraged by the fact that Jesus has been there before us, that his sufferings are interwoven with ours, and that for us too, despite the darkness, pain and almost despair of the here and now, resurrection somehow lies ahead.” (Brother Columba Gleeson. “Truly Human”. Living Our Faith. pg.168 rephrased)
