PADAWAN — On 30 August, more than 160 Catholic communities from Simpok Zone under the jurisdiction of St Ann’s Parish participated in the 5th Simpok Zone Family Day. It was held at Kpg Bengoh, Padawan. This year Kpg Bengoh was the host for the event.
Villages that participated in the activities were Kpg Mundai, Simpok, Jambu, Kuang Menjau, Bengoh, Timurang and Danu. Among the highlights of the various activities were tele match, lucky draw, football match and live band in the evening. Stalls selling food and drinks were also set up.
A Mass was celebrated by Friar William Lee OFM the next morning at Kpg Jambu. Friar William also blessed the Primary Six students who would be sitting for the UPSR examinations.
The yearly activity was aimed at strengthening the bond of the Catholic communities of St Ann Simpok Zone. Each village will host the event on a rotation basis.
PADAWAN — July 15 was a momentous occasion for 36 Catholic families of Kpg Mundai, Padawan when they celebrated the 34th anniversary of their St Bonaventure’s Church with Friar Gerard Victor OFM and Simpok Zone Community.
St Bonaventure’s Church was built in 1980 and was led by the late Justin Kirim and Anthony Sinyam. The community started out with only five families. Today, they grew to 36 families. Before the Church was built, the five families had their Sunday Service at the house of the late Justin Kirim.
The celebration began with a Holy Mass presided over by Friar Gerard Victor OFM. Also present were Br Kenny OFM and Br Vernon OFM from Singapore.After Mass, the celebration continued with a simple cake cutting ceremony. A potluck dinner ended the celebration.
KUCHING — Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) held a blessing ceremony for 312 abandoned, abused and stray animals at its shelter here about 10am yesterday in conjunction with World Animal Day.
The ceremony, the first time organised by the society, was conducted by Fr Gerard Victor a Franciscan friar, witnessed by SSPCA committee members and staff.
“The 300 or so animals at the shelter will not be able to attend the pet blessing ceremony on Oct 6. We thank Fr Gerard for agreeing to conduct a special blessing today for the abandoned animals, many of which are healing from their wounds, and all of them waiting for find new, loving homes,” said SSPCA chairman Rebecca D’Cruz.
SSPCA president Dona Drury Wee also thanked Fr Gerard and his fellow brothers for agreeing to conduct the ceremony, adding that “their love for animals echoes our own and we are truly blessed to have their support for this event.”
Fr Gerard said: “The blessing of pets is part of the Franciscan tradition that is shared freely with creation and nature.
“The animals of God’s creation inhabit the skies, earth and sea. They share the fortunes of human existence and have part in human life.”
PADAWAN — A joint celebration was held on Sunday, 24 July to mark the 43rd anniversary of the founding of the St Ann’s Parish and St Ann’s Feast Day. About 3,000 strong congregation proved the unfailing faith of parishioners. The event was a great success because not only was it well-organised but also the youths played a huge part in it to make it happen.
The Holy Mass was presided by the Archbishop of Kuching, His Grace Archbishop John Ha and concelebrated by five other priests namely the Rector of St Ann’s Parish, Rev Fr Gerard Victor OFM and his resident friars, a visiting friar Rev Fr Johnny Wong OFM and Rev Fr Simon Poh, a former rector of the Parish before the Franciscans took over.
