New Ambassador meets Pope in Rome, sporting baju Melayu

PETALING JAYA — June 11, 2019. Malaysian Ambassador to the Vatican, Westmoreland Anak Edward Palon yesterday delivered his credentials to the Pope in Rome, dressed in a baju Melayu and accompanied by members of his family.

According to TV news agency Rome Reports, Westmoreland also presented Pope Francis with a Malaysian tapestry while the Pope gave him a selection of magisterial texts and rosaries.

The two then held closed-door discussions on issues of mutual interest.

Westmoreland, who began his career as an administrative and diplomatic officer at Wisma Putra in 1996, was appointed as the ambassador-designate of Malaysia to the Holy See on March 21.

Before that, he had been the consul-general at the Consulate-General of Malaysia in Melbourne, Australia, since 2015.

He served as assistant secretary (West Europe) from 1996 until 1999, assistant secretary (Information) from 1999 until 2000 and second secretary at the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore from 2000 until 2004.
