SRI AMAN — The faithful of the Kuching Archdiocese recently witnessed a profound spiritual journey as the Salib (Cross) went from St Joseph’s Cathedral, Kuching, to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish (OLQP), Sri Aman. This sacred movement of the Cross was a powerful reminder of Christ’s sacrifice and the unity of the Catholic Church in Malaysia.

The Handing Over: A Sacred Moment of Transition

On 3 May 2025, during the Sunset Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral, the parish youth entrusted the Salib to the Sri Aman delegation, led by PPC Chairman Mr Colin Robert Lanuk and accompanied by four youth representatives from Holy Family Church (HFC) Betong, under the leadership of Youth Leader Mr John Inyang. This symbolic act marked the continuation of the Cross’s pilgrimage across the archdiocese, inspiring deeper prayer and reflection among the faithful

Background: The SALIB’s National Journey

The SALIB was first presented for veneration during the Malaysian Catholic Youth Day (MCYD) in April 2025. Following the event, it was divided into nine individual crosses (Salib), each sent to a different diocese in Malaysia. These crosses will eventually reunite in September 2026 at the Malaysia Pastoral Convention (MPC 2026), symbolising the unity of the Catholic Church in the country.

A Day of Grace: The Salib’s Procession in Sri Aman

4 May 2025 was a day of celebration and blessing for OLQP Sri Aman as the parish welcomed the Salib with great joy. The faithful gathered in prayer and solidarity, processing with the Cross through their community—a moving testament to their shared faith.

Highlights of the Day:

• A Cross Carried in Unity: The Salib was reverently borne by parish chairmen representing the Sri Aman Catholic community: Mr Colin Robert Lanuk (PPC Chairman, OLQP), Mr Peter Engkasang (Chairman, St Ignatius Church), Ms Amelia (Chairman, MHC), Mr Leo Dennie (Chairman, Holy Family Church Betong), Mr Charles Kiding (Chairman, St Michael’s Lubok Antu), and Mr Lawren Larun (Secretary, St Anthony’s Skrang), symbolising our collective faith as the Cross united parishes across the region in prayer and devotion.”

• A Call to Prayer: As the parish carried the Cross, they offered prayers for peace, strength, and deeper faith in their families and society.

• A Journey Toward MPC 2026: This Salib is one of nine traveling across Malaysia, each carrying the hopes and prayers of the faithful before their grand reunion next year.

The sun shone brightly as young and old walked together, singing hymns and reflecting on Christ’s love. It was a day filled with grace, joy, and spiritual renewal—a true affirmation that “We carry the Cross with joy, for it is our hope and salvation!”

On 3 May 2025, the sacred SALIB (Cross) was joyfully welcomed and set up at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish (OLQP), Sri Aman, marking the next step in its spiritual journey across our archdiocese. May this holy cross inspire us to deeper prayer, unity, and faith as we prepare for its eventual reunion at MPC 2026!

A Lasting Legacy of Faith

The Salib’s visit to Sri Aman was more than just an event; it was a call to live out the Gospel with courage and love. May its presence inspire all Catholics to embrace their mission with faith and unity as the Cross continues its journey.

Let us carry this memory in our hearts, knowing that Christ walks with us in every step of our journey.
