Closing of the Jubilee Year of Hope in the Archdiocese of Kuching

KUCHING – The Jubilee Year of Hope was decreed by the Holy Father Pope Francis in the bull of Indiction of the Ordinary Jubilee of the Year 2025 Spes non confundit (Hope does not disappoint) where the Jubilee Year was inaugurated on 24 December 2024 on the  Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord with the opening of the Holy Door of the Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican.

On 29 December 2024 on the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the opening of the Jubilee was celebrated at St Joseph’s Cathedral Kuching in union with all Catholic Churches throughout the world.

In the Archdiocese of Kuching, there were five designated pilgrimage centres for the Jubilee Year namely, St Joseph’s Cathedral, St Peter’s Church Padungan, Mount Hosanna Chapel, Catholic Memorial and Pilgrimage Centre Mount Singai and Gethsemane Pilgrimage Centre in Bunan.

During the Jubilee Year, many in the Archdiocese made pilgrimages to the designated centres, as well as pilgrimage sites in other dioceses in Malaysia and abroad.

In accordance with the papal bull, the Jubilee Year will close on 28 December 2025, feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph for all Churches throughout the world.

In the Archdiocese of Kuching, the closing of Jubilee Year of Hope will be celebrated at the 5 pm Holy Mass for the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph on 28 December 2025 at St Joseph’s Cathedral Kuching. The Mass will be presided by Archbishop Emeritus John Ha.

Special prayers will be offered at this Mass as a thanksgiving to God for the grace and blessings received during the Jubilee Year. The Mass will conclude with prayer over the people and solemn blessing.

During the recessional procession at the end of Mass, the Jubilee Cross will be carried out in procession as a symbolic gesture to mark the closing of the Jubilee Year in the Archdiocese. All are welcome to pray and offer thanks to God for the grace and blessings received during the Jubilee Year.
