Four Friars Make Perpetual Profession in Joyful Celebration

By Friar Pius Kallang, OFM Cap.

KENINGAU, SABAH (21 June 2025)  — In a momentous and joy-filled celebration, the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in the Custody of Malaysia-Singapore witnessed a historic milestone as four friars made their perpetual profession of vows. The event, held at the Holy Family Pilgrimage Centre in Nulu Sosopon, drew a crowd of over 500 faithful, family members, and friends who gathered to support and celebrate this significant occasion.

Friars Tony Bingkuan, OFMCap., Randall Lee Ken Haw, OFMCap., Marthin bin Steven, OFMCap., and Peter bin Langgayang, OFMCap., entered the chapel in solemn procession, accompanied by fellow friars, their families, and priest concelebrants. Their decision to dedicate their lives permanently to the Capuchin Franciscan way of life was met with overwhelming joy and encouragement from the community.

A Solemn Mass, overflowing into the external sections of the chapel, marked the high point of the day. The rite included the litany of saints where each friar prostrated before the altar and the profession of the vows before the Custos. Presiding over the Eucharistic celebration was the Most Reverend Bishop Cornilius Piong, who extended heartfelt congratulations to the newly professed friars and called them to embrace their missionary vocation with fervor.

Friar Michael Raymond, OFMCap., First Councillor of the Custody, delivered the homily, drawing inspiration from the chosen theme of the profession, “My God and My All,” words of St Francis of Assisi that was taken from The Little Flowers of St Francis. “To take God as one’s all is no simple matter,” he said, “it is a radical response that begins at baptism and matures into a life that bears beautiful fruit.” His words echoed the deep spiritual significance of the occasion.

The Custos of the Custody, the Very Reverend Friar Gilbert James, OFMCap., received the vows of the four friars and offered his own encouragement during the post-Mass address. Urging the faithful not to fear the call of God, he quoted the prophet Samuel the reading chosen by the friars present: “Here I am, I come to do your will.” He also encouraged them to smile as the true sign of joy is when a franciscan friar is joy even in sadness. He also made a heartfelt appeal to parents and families: “Encourage your children. Do not stifle their interest if and when they feel drawn to give their lives radically to God as priests or religious. God can never be outdone in generosity.”

Adding to the joy of the event was the presence of a delegation of friars from the Philippines, including the Provincial Minister, Br. Edgar S. Martinez, OFMCap., who came to witness and support this landmark event for the region.

Following the Mass, the congregation was invited to a simple luncheon where various cultural performances were presented, much to the delight of all who attended.

As the friars embark on a life of service, prayer, and fraternity, the event served not only as a celebration of their commitment but also as a powerful reminder of the vibrancy of religious life. Young people are especially encouraged to open their hearts to God’s call, to listen attentively and courageously respond—just as these four friars have done. The Church continues to need generous souls willing to say, “Here I am.”
