KUALA LUMPUR — The Kuala Lumpur Archdiocesan Catechetical Ministry (KLACM) launched the “Journey through the Catechism of the Catholic Church” (JCCC 2.0) for its second cohort on February 7 at the Church of the Holy Rosary. Ninety-seven participants have registered for the course, which is open to catechists and noncatechists interested in pursuing a basic course in Theology. The objectives of the course are to help participants have a better understanding of the Catholic faith, as well as use the CCC as a resource for self-study and lesson planning.

The course covers the four parts of the CCC. These are “The Profession of Faith” (Creed), “The Celebration of the Christian Mystery”, “Life in Christ” (Commandments) and “Christian Prayer” (Our Father). The arrangement corresponds to the faith that the Church professes, celebrates, lives and expresses and deepens. Most of the sessions will be presented by experts in their respective fields of study related to the four parts of the CCC.

The opening session was presented by Dr Steven Selvaraju, director of the Archdiocesan Catechetical Centre. The three topics he covered were “The Background to the CCC”, “Structure of the CCC” and “Using the CCC Effectively”. Dr Steven began by tracing the events and reasons leading to the publication of the CCC. He then explained the structure of the CCC, which presents the essential teachings of the Church in a unified and organic way. In the last session, he guided the participants in a practical way on how to refer to the CCC in a systematic manner.

Dr Steven emphasised that it is important for Catholics, especially catechists, to realise the importance of the CCC as a key resource in knowing and appreciating the faith, as well as to transmit it with clarity and conviction to others. He quoted Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Exhortation, Fidei depositum, which accompanied the publication of the CCC in 1992. The pope had stated that the purpose of the CCC is to present “a full, complete exposition of Catholic doctrine, enabling everyone to know what the Church professes, celebrates, lives and prays in her daily life.”

In total, the JCCC course consists three onsite and eight online sessions. At the end of the course in November, 2026, the participants who meet the requirements in terms of attendance and submission of assignments will receive the Certificate of Completion. As a result, they will be eligible to enroll in the Certificate in Catechetics course, which will be organised by KLACM in 2027.

Dr Steven, stated that it is the second time KLACM is organising the JCCC course. The first was in 2024 and this concluded with sixty-five people receiving their certificates. Out of these, twentyfour of them went on to complete the Certificate in Catechetics course in 2025. KLACM plans to organise the JCCC and Certificate in Catechetics course in rotation every two years.

He added that KLACM has also launched the Certificate in Catechetics course for the first time in Tamil this year. Twenty-four people, who had completed the Basic Theology Course in Tamil in 2023 and 2024, are currently participating in the course.
