KUCHING — On 17 August 2025, 31 students aged 13–15, together with their parents, took part in the Modesty Pledge at St Peter’s Church, Sunday School.
Conducted over two dedicated sessions, the programme combined sharing, reflection, and multimedia to help our youth understand modesty as more than clothing — as a way of letting Christ shine through their words, actions, and presence. The students first explored the meaning of modesty in today’s world, learning how to balance personal identity, peer influence, and faith values.
The final session concluded with parents and guardians, where families witnessed their children making the Modesty Pledge together — a public commitment to live with dignity, respect, and faith as children of God.
The aim of the pledge is not to impose rules, but to form conscience and character — giving youth the strength to resist negative influences and helping parents guide them with consistency at home. It helps our young people recognise their God-given dignity and encouraging them to be witnesses of Christ in the way they dress, speak, and behave.
Knowledge and awareness about modesty is vital for both youth and parents. For parents, it strengthens their role as the first teachers of faith, equipping them to guide their children with understanding and consistency at home. When both parent and child share this awareness, the lesson of modesty becomes a lived value, not just a lesson.
As Pope Francis reminds us, “Faith is passed on by contact, from one person to another, just as one candle is lit from another.”
The work of Sunday School is a partnership with parents, who are the first teachers of faith. The program’s success rests not only on the dedication of catechists, but also on families who consistently bring their children week after week. Their commitment reflects a deep desire to see their children grow in faith and love for the Church.
We invite parents: bring your children and let them grow in the faith through this journey of learning, prayer, and community. Together, with the support of catechists, parents, and parishioners, may our young people grow to be strong witnesses of Christ’s love in the world.
