SRI AMAN — On 30 July 2025, at SK Engkilili No. 1, the Social Intervention Program: Awareness and Advocacy on Sexual Education (KAPS) for Primary Schools in Sri Aman Division was successfully held. This program was organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Community Wellbeing (KPWK) through the Sarawak Social Development Council, in collaboration with the Sri Aman Resident’s Office and the One Stop Teenage Pregnancy Committee (OSTPC) for Sri Aman Division.
The program, which was attended by the Head of Departments from Sri Aman and Lubok Antu, the District Officer of Lubok Antu, the Lubok Antu District Police Chief, the Sri Aman Division Health Officer, the Director of the Hospital, the Islamic Religious Officer, the President of Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS), the President of Pro-Life Group, Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS), along with teachers, parents, and students, aimed to raise awareness and advocacy among children and school students on the importance of preventing sexual misconduct.
The main objective of this program was to provide an educational platform that would equip participants with healthy sexual education knowledge and empower them with interpersonal skills necessary as a protective shield for personal safety.
Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and Child Protection
Through organising this program, it is hoped that the participants would better understand and appreciate the importance of protecting themselves from the threat of sexual misconduct. With a holistic approach, the program aimed to ensure that students, particularly, would be able to recognise the early signs of sexual misconduct, understand their rights, and seek support when facing concerning situations. This is crucial in the effort to protect them from becoming victims or getting entangled in unhealthy sexual behaviour.
The Approach of Moral and Religious Values in Sexual Education
One of the key sessions of the program was an input delivered by Fr Henry Jimbey from Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Sri Aman, who was entrusted with providing spiritual and moral input. Titled, “The Application of Virtuous, Moral, and Religious Values in Sexual Education”, Fr Henry delivered a deeply impactful talk, connecting sexual education with religious values that can help shape a responsible and ethical attitude among children and teenagers.
Awareness through Education and Advocacy
Fr Henry emphasised that sexual education should not only focus on biological and physical aspects but must also encompass moral values, virtues, and religious responsibilities. He reminded the audience that the education provided must go hand in hand with spiritual education, ensuring that the younger generation is not only equipped with knowledge about their bodies and rights but also guided by principles that respect themselves and others.
Collaboration and Hope for the Future
This program clearly demonstrated the joint commitment of various parties in empowering the community to face increasingly challenging social issues. It is hoped that through deeper awareness of sexual education, children and students in the Sri Aman Division will be more open to discussing related issues and become more courageous in seeking help when needed.
Deepest gratitude is extended to all parties involved in organising this program, especially Fr Henry Jimbey, for delivering such an inspiring and thought-provoking lecture. It is hoped that this program will continue with more initiatives and efforts to raise awareness and protect our children in the future.
