KUCHING — The newly consecrated St Peter’s Church in Padungan overflowed with reverence and thanksgiving on the evening of 30 June 2025, as the Catholic community came together to honour a beloved priest and shepherd, Rev Fr Vincent Chin, on the occasion of his 40th Anniversary of Priesthood and 70th Birthday, fondly celebrated as the “4070 Thanksgiving Celebration.”

The evening commenced with a Thanksgiving Mass, presided by His Grace Archbishop Simon Poh, together with His Eminence Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Archbishop Julian Leow of Kuala Lumpur, Archbishop Emeritus Peter Chung, Archbishop Emeritus John Ha, and priests from across Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia. The Mass was live-streamed, enabling many to join virtually in this joyful celebration.

In his homily, Cardinal Francis reflected on the Preface of the Priesthood of Christ and the Ministry of Priests, highlighting six essential characteristics of the Catholic priesthood. Drawing from the Gospel, he noted that at 70 years old, Fr Chin shows no signs of weariness, a living testament to the promise in Isaiah 40:31: “They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.”

The Cardinal emphasised that it is through trusting and waiting on the Lord that a priest draws the strength to serve selflessly. He reminded leaders to remain humble, even when called to lead firmly. True authority, he said, must be grounded in humility, modelled after Christ the Good Shepherd.

At the heart of his message was the triple dialogue between Jesus and Peter, where Jesus asks: “Do you love me?”. This moment, the Cardinal said, reflects the essence of priestly ministry – Agape – a sacrificial love rooted in total self-giving for the flock.

Following the Mass, over 900 guests gathered for a Thanksgiving Dinner organised and hosted by the Parish Council Committee. Among the attendees were Fr Chin’s family members, parishioners, lay leaders, and guests from near and far.

The evening featured a vibrant programme of cultural dances, choir performances by the Consecration Mass Choir and seminarians, a touching video montage chronicling Fr Chin’s pastoral journey, and a heartwarming pre-recorded song presentation by Sunday School children from the Faith Formation programme.

In their speeches, many paid tribute to Fr Chin’s unwavering commitment to priestly service. Archbishop Simon Poh shared proudly that the town of Simanggang has produced three priests, including Fr Chin and himself. Archbishop Simon Poh also paid a heartfelt tribute to Fr Chin’s many contributions—not only as a spiritual shepherd but also as a visionary builder. With a background in architecture, Fr Chin has significantly shaped the physical and spiritual growth of the Church wherever he has been posted. Parish Council Chairman Joseph Wong commended Fr Chin for his pastoral attentiveness, particularly his compassionate readiness to attend to the sick and dying—a gesture that has brought comfort and peace to many families.

Taking the stage, Fr Vincent Chin humbly shared his spiritual journey—one marked by blessings, challenges, and deep faith. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his extended family for their unwavering love and support, especially during his recovery from a serious heart condition.

Fr Chin also took the opportunity to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many generous individuals and families who contributed toward the building of the newly consecrated St Peter’s Church. He noted that their generosity and sacrifice have made it possible for the parish to have a sacred space that truly glorifies God and serves the community for generations to come.

He closed with a message of encouragement to all: “If we trust God and work with Him, He will deliver. It is important that we follow God’s direction and guidance.”

Fr Chin’s words echoed the enduring spirit of a shepherd deeply rooted in God’s providence. His life and ministry continue to inspire many, and the 4070 celebration served as a beautiful tribute to a faithful servant of Christ and His Church.
