KUCHING — World Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on 22 April to demonstrate support for environmental protection, serving as a reminder of our responsibility to safeguard our planet for future generations. Earth Day plays a vital role in inspiring positive change and fostering a deeper connection between humanity and planet. It resonates with Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’ – on Care for our Common Home.
The theme for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet”. The campaign focuses on accelerating clean energy, increasing accountability for environmental damage and promoting community-scale climate solutions. Holy Trinity Parish, Kenyalang provided awareness on reducing waste with three activities on 17 – 26 April 2026.
Recycling as Care for Creation
A collection centre was set up at Holy Trinity Parish for plastic bottles, aluminium cans, glass bottles and unusable cardboard to unload the municipal rubbish loads into dumping places. This was initiated on 17 April 2026. What truly elevates the recycling hub over an ordinary collection centre are the custom rope nets to store or hold recycled materials. Our patient weavers going through the slow, rhythmic process of tying knots created highly durable, flexible, and eco-friendly holding solution for bulk items, bags, or recyclables that would serve humanity for a very long time.
Another session on bag making from plastic wrapper was conducted on 17 April 2026. Facilitated by Lucy Heng, sorting plastic wrappers and cutting into strips was demonstrated.
Ecoenzyme Making and its Soap
On 25 April 2026, Fr Andre Delimarta, SDB conducted a workshop seminar on the “Making of Eco Enzyme and its Soap” in Bahasa Malaysia. A very good turnup was from not only parishioners from Holy Trinity Parish, but other parishes participated in the workshop.
