KUCHING (May 9) — The Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) has expressed confidence that the newly elected Pope Leo XIV will lead with faithfulness, clarity, courage, and love, wrapped in humility of service, modelled by Lord Jesus Christ.

ACS chairman, the Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute, in a statement, said the organisation joins the Catholic community in celebrating and giving thanks for Pope Leo XIV’s election as the new Bishop of Rome.

“As the world sadly continues to face significant challenges, not least with wars and economic crises, religious extremism, poverty, exploitation of people as well as the environment, all of which bring great suffering especially to the most innocent and vulnerable in our societies, we need a strong global voice and leadership for human dignity and overcoming violence, injustice and divisions,” said the Anglican Church Bishop for Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam.

He welcomed Pope Leo’s emphasis on the Church being a missionary community that shares in the world’s struggles while proclaiming God’s unconditional love.

He also lauded the pope’s commitment to peacebuilding through dialogue and his call for unity among the faithful.

“We pray that by God’s grace, Pope Leo will lead with faithfulness, clarity of vision and voice, courage and love, wrapped in humility of service, modelled by our Lord Jesus Christ,” said Danald.

In an AFP report, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope yesterday, becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church.

He succeeds Argentine reformer Pope Francis and has taken the name Leo XIV.
