MIRI – The Miri St Joseph Youth (SJY) Committee organised the first Youth Mass of the year on 30 January 2026 at St Anthony of Padua, Tudan Church. The Mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Ronald Jimmy.
In his homily, Fr Ronald Jimmy reflected on the influence of modern technology, particularly mobile phones, on the faith journey of today’s youth. He emphasised that while technology continues to advance rapidly, young people must remain rooted in God’s Word. As the youth are the future of the Church, he reminded them of the importance of living according to God’s teachings regardless of distractions, especially those arising from social media.
Fr Ronald encouraged the youth to allow the Word of God to take root in their lives, planted like a seed that will grow and bear fruit in due time. He reminded them to continue living in God’s light even when His Word may not be fully understood at present, trusting that understanding will come in time, for the Word of God is alive.
The SJY Committee was established with the objectives of igniting the spirit of service among young people and encouraging their active participation in Church ministries. As the youth will one day become the future backbone of the Church, their involvement is vital. Youth participation during the Mass involved several youth groups of several churches, reflecting the SJY Committee’s commitment to nurturing faith, service, and unity among young Catholics, in support of the mission and objectives of the SJY.
The newly elected SJY Committee President, Mr Calvin Bernard Tommy, expressed his hope that more young people would come forward to serve in various ministries across all Churches, participating enthusiastically with sincerity and unwavering faith.
The Holy Mass was participated by youth groups representing the various Churches and ministries, namely St John Bosco Youth (STJB), Light Youth Tudan (LYT), St Joseph Youth Group, Christ Teen, Holy Spirit Permy, Piasau Youth, Choice Youth, St Dominic Youth, St Peter and Paul Youth, MiDYA Youth, and the Blessed Sacrament of Long Lama Youth. This marked a meaningful beginning to this year’s Catholic youth assembly and to the many events to come.
Young people are encouraged to come forward and become involved in the youth group nearest to their Church community. Participation offers opportunities for faith formation, fellowship, and service to the Church. Further information may be obtained through the respective youth group social media page or by approaching members of the various youth groups (they’re super friendly!).
