Tribute to Sr Beatrice Brigid Ng, SSFS

By Sisters of St Francis Sarawak (SSFS)

KUCHING — Sr Beatrice Brigid Ng returned to the Lord on 19 May 2026 (Tuesday), at 2.53 a.m. at the Home of Santa Clara (HSC), Kuching, at the age of 87. Born in Sibu, Sarawak, on 18 December 1939, she was baptised at the Sacred Heart Church, Sibu, on 15 January 1940 and was known as Brigid.

The Funeral Mass was held at St Joseph’s Cathedral on 21 May 2026, at 10.00 a.m and was presided over by Msgr William Sabang, together with six concelebrating priests. In his homily, Msgr William recalled a conversation with Archbishop Emeritus Peter Chung on the subject of death and the importance of praying for the departed.

Reflecting on John 11:17–21, the account of Lazarus, he reminded the faithful that death is not the end of life but a passage into new life with God. Quoting the words of Jesus, “Anyone who believes in me will never die,” he emphasised that Christ is the Resurrection, the Way, and the Life. Through Baptism, believers are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, giving Christians hope and assurance of eternal life. He encouraged the congregation to continue praying faithfully for the souls of the departed and to place their trust in Christ’s victory over death.

After the Funeral Mass and cremation at Nirvana Memorial Park, Bau, Sr Beatrice’s remains were interred at St Peter’s Columbarium, Padungan.

From a young age, Sr Beatrice felt called to religious life. In a heartfelt letter written to Superior Mother Rita Smith on 19 October 1957, she expressed her desire to become “a Little Sister”, sharing that she had longed for this vocation since childhood. She entered the convent in January 1958 and made her First Profession on 11 August 1960 and took her Perpetual Religious Profession on 8 August, 1965.

From 1958 to 1960, Sr Beatrice underwent her novitiate formation at the Convent of Mary Immaculate. During this period, she devoted herself to spiritual formation and studies while also faithfully carrying out various household duties within the convent community.

Her vocation blossomed into decades of humble and faithful service throughout Sarawak, particularly in education, catechetical ministry, pastoral outreach, and care for the needy. She served in numerous missions, including Kuching, Marudi, Long San, Miri, Bintulu, Mukah, Bunan-Gega, and Sarikei. Sr Beatrice was among the pioneer sisters in both Marudi and Bintulu, helping to establish and strengthen the Church’s pastoral and educational presence in those areas.

Known for her gentle and caring spirit, Sr Beatrice was especially devoted to children. She spent many years teaching in kindergartens and preparing children for the sacraments. Former students and parishioners remember her as a patient, joyful, and dedicated teacher who quietly touched many lives through her kindness and simplicity.

One of her longest ministries was at the Sarawak Cheshire Home, where she served compassionately as an occupational teacher and therapist while continuing her involvement in early childhood education. Her life reflected the Franciscan spirit of humility, service, and love for the vulnerable.

Beyond her ministry, Sr Beatrice was remembered as a lively and warm-hearted person. Before entering religious life, she was active in sports and carried that energetic spirit throughout her life. She also had a deep compassion for animals, especially stray dogs, which she lovingly fed and cared for.

In the light of the Gospel, the faithful believe that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life in God. Sr Beatrice faithfully followed Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life, and her witness continues to inspire all who knew her.

As the congregation bids farewell to Sr Beatrice, thanksgiving is offered to God for her 68 years of religious life, her unwavering dedication to mission, and her quiet yet powerful witness of love and hope. May the Lord whom she served so faithfully now welcome her into eternal peace and joy.

“Anyone who believes in me will never die.” (John 11:26)
