MIRI — On Tuesday, 11 February 2026, St Joseph’s Cathedral, Miri, held a special Mass for the Sick. A total of 120 faithful registered for the celebration, many of whom were elderly parishioners and those facing chronic illness or physical challenges.
The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Richard Ng and con-celebrated by Fr Gabriel Chiong, Fr Jack Nayak and Fr. Ronald Jimmy.
The liturgy was prayerful and reverent. During the Rite of Anointing, the clergy laid hands on each participant and anointed them with the Oil of the Sick, praying for God’s healing grace, strength and peace. The sick and elderly were seated in the front pews in wheelchairs, accompanied by family members and caregivers who stood beside them in support. The atmosphere in the Cathedral was one of compassion, faith and quiet trust in the Lord’s mercy.
The celebration was a powerful reminder of Christ’s healing ministry and the Church’s pastoral care for those who suffer. The strong turnout reflected the community’s solidarity with the sick and the elderly, affirming that they are cherished and remembered within the life of the Church. Many participants were visibly comforted and strengthened by the prayers of the Church community and the sacramental graces received. May we all extend Christ’s love and mercy to the sick and elderly in our midst.
