KUCHING — On 16 July 2026, the Christ the King Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) Community, together with the Carmelite Nuns, celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at the Carmelite Chapel in an atmosphere of deep prayer, joyful fellowship, and heartfelt Marian devotion.
The day’s celebration began with a Solemn Eucharistic Celebration in the morning, presided over by Archbishop Simon Poh at the Carmelite Chapel. His grace spoke on the history and the significance of the Brown Scapular.
As evening approached, the community gathered once again for a special prayer service led by Rev Fr Nicholas Ng. A highlight of the gathering was a reflection by Cynthia Lim, OCDS, on the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She shared the rich Carmelite heritage of this treasured sacramental, emphasizing that the Brown Scapular is not merely an outward sign of devotion but an invitation to deepen one’s relationship with Christ through prayer, holiness of life, and faithful imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The faithful then united in praying the Holy Rosary, entrusting their families, vocations, and personal intentions to the loving care of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The evening culminated in a reverent candlelight procession to the Shrine of Our Lady, where voices joined in hymns of praise, creating a beautiful witness of faith and hope.
One of the most meaningful moments of the celebration was the distribution of the Brown Scapular to the faithful. For generations, this cherished sacramental has reminded countless believers of Mary’s maternal protection and has encouraged them to live the Gospel with greater fidelity, trusting always in God’s mercy and grace.
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was more than a liturgical celebration — it was a joyful expression of the unity of the Carmelite family. Clergy, religious sisters, Secular Carmelites, and the faithful came together as one community, strengthened in faith and inspired to continue their spiritual journey under the loving mantle of Our Lady.
May Our Lady of Mount Carmel continue to intercede for us, guiding us ever closer to her Son, Jesus Christ, and inspiring us to live lives of prayer, contemplation, and loving service.
