CHERAS — More than 250 parishioners representing all 33 Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) of the Church of St Francis of Assisi, gathered recently at John Paul II Hall for their annual ’33 BEC Gathering’, celebrating the spirit of communion, fellowship and service.
Centred on the theme, Everyone can be great because everyone can serve, the gathering brought BEC members together to renew their commitment towards building vibrant Christian communities rooted in faith, friendship and humble service.
The evening began with praise and worship. Participants then took part in a treasure hunt, working with their zone members to identify items connected to the Catholic faith and Church traditions.
Addressing the gathering, parish priest, Fr Paul Cheong OFM Cap, reminded parishioners that each person is precious in God’s eyes and entrusted with unique gifts.
He encouraged them not to underestimate their individual calling but to recognise their God-given talents and use them generously in service of the Church and society. True greatness, he said, is not measured by position or status, but by a willing heart to serve.
In his keynote address, Parish Coordinating Council (PCC) chairman, Lt Col (Rtd) Nixon Ng Bujang expressed his appreciation to BEC leaders and members for their dedication and countless hours of service to the parish.
While many see the activities organised by the BECs, he noted that the sacrifices, commitment and hard work behind the scenes often go unnoticed. On behalf of the PCC, he thanked all volunteers whose faithful service continues to strengthen parish life and bring Christ closer to others.
Drawing from his own experience as a Zone Leader and BEC Leader for almost 12 years in his previous parish, Nixon shared that successful BECs are not built on programmes alone but on meaningful relationships.
“The secret is bonding,” he said, emphasising the importance of spending time together beyond regular prayer meetings — through family gatherings, celebrations, outreach and accompanying one another in daily life.
He reminded participants that “people do not commit to programmes; people commit to people.” When genuine friendships are formed, he said, service becomes joyful, collaboration becomes natural and challenges become easier because no one journeys alone.
Echoing the vision of the upcoming Malaysia Pastoral Convention, Nixon encouraged BECs to be welcoming communities where people feel valued, supported and loved, as the mission of the Church begins within the family, the BEC and the parish.
The evening was a reminder that the strength of a parish is found not only in its programmes but in the relationships that unite its people.
The gathering reaffirmed that true greatness is found in serving God and one another, and that every parishioner has a part to play in building a Church rooted in communion, participation and mission.
